Qianjiang Golden Bridge: A Cinema Transformed into an Art Gallery

Ajax Law and Virginia Lung's Award-Winning Design Merges Film and Art

The inspiration for the Qianjiang Golden Bridge came from the idea that movies, like red wine, get better with age. The designers chose an art gallery as the theme to display classic movies and evoke nostalgia. The cinema is designed to feel like a step back in time, a place where the clock stops ticking and audiences can fully immerse themselves in the world of the film.

The unique properties of the design lie in its transformation of the cinema into an art gallery. The main color scheme is black and white, with squares of various sizes found on different surfaces, creating a sense of elegance and serenity. Large picture frames displaying new and old movie posters line the walls, mimicking the layout of an art gallery. These frames are arranged casually, adding a relaxed tone to the space.

The designers used three methods to present the theme of the movie. Black and white posters of old movies are mounted in simple, neat frames, while posters for new movies are colored and displayed in frames with glowing edges. This not only adds variety to the decorations but also clearly differentiates which movies are currently showing. Large screens installed to show movie trailers add a dynamic element to the theme presentation.

The Qianjiang Golden Bridge, located in Hubei, China, covers an area of 2890 sq. m. The project was completed in August 2017. The design team included Ajax Law and Virginia Lung, and the copyrights belong to One Plus Partnership Limited. The project was awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, a prestigious award given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
